Chamber Music Milwaukee – A Celebration of Yehuda Yannay

For its opening concert, Chamber Music Milwaukee celebrates the late composer Yehuda Yannay (1937-2023). Yehuda taught composition at UW-Milwaukee and enjoyed an international career spanning six decades. UWM faculty and guests will perform a sample of Yehuda's chamber music including his piano trio, Hidden Melodies for horn and cello, Tandem pieces for horn and Bayan and The Exquisite Viola transcribed for solo violin.

Winner of the Grand Prize at Cinéma du Réel 2024 and Best Film of the Encounter Program at Berlinale 2024. Direct action is a tactical strategy of protest that seeks to achieve an end directly and by the most effective means. DIRECT ACTION is a contemporary portrait of one of the most high-profile militant activist communities in France: a 150-person strong rural collective that successfully resisted an international airport expansion project in 2018, created an autonomous zone between 2012 and 2018, survived multiple violent eviction attempts by the French state and spawned a new ecological movement in 2021.

New York/Berlin-based artist Trevor Paglen spans numerous disciplines. He has launched an artwork into distant orbit around Earth in collaboration with Creative Time and MIT, contributed research and cinematography to the Academy Award-winning film Citizenfour, and created a radioactive public sculpture for the exclusion zone in Fukushima, Japan.

Jewelry Speaks: The Voice of the Jill Wine-Banks Pin Collection

Jill Wine-Banks is a distinguished attorney, former Watergate prosecutor, general counsel for the Army during the Carter Administration, MSNBC Legal Analyst, podcast host, and a specific kind of jewelry collector. Jill uses the pin as a messaging device to convey ideas, make statements, and construct narratives. This is an exhibition and archiving project featuring pins mined from her personal collection accumulated over a lifetime of work in the political and legal landscape in the US.

Jazz Ensembles

The 18-member UWM Jazz Ensemble performs music written or arranged specifically for a large jazz orchestra. The repertoire includes music from Duke Ellington and Count Basie as well as contemporary composers such as Maria Schneider, Tom Matta and Bob Mintzer.

With artist Lisa Truttmann live in person for a Q&A after the screening! Lisa Truttmann is an artist and filmmaker based in Vienna. In her artistic practice, she combines documentary, essayistic, and poetic methods to investigate the sociologies and ecologies of landscapes and architectures. She is interested in relationships between human and non-human agents as well as in their spaces of interaction.

Nina Ghanbarzadeh (Afkhamian) is a visual artist whose work is informed by the geometric and biomorphic patterns, colors, and textures of her Persian cultural traditions. Ghanbarzadeh emigrated from Tehran, Iran in 2001. She earned her BFA in painting, drawing and graphic design from the UW-Milwaukee in 2013 and completed a two-year Artist in Residence Program with Redline Milwaukee in 2015.

It offers spectacular grace and one of the most beautiful reunions this master of the theatrical stage ever wrote.

Jovanny Hernandez Caballero is a community artist and photographer based in Milwaukee. He is a first-generation American and descendant of Mixtecs, an Indigenous people based in present-day Mexico. His work centers around themes of cultural heritage and identity. Jovanny documents the beauty of Milwaukee's South Side and his family's native land of Oaxaca, Mexico. He completed his BFA in Photography & Imaging at UW-Milwaukee in 2023.

pax duo | Percussion Guest Artists

pax duo is a dynamic percussion project created by Tristan Swihart and Micah Detweiler. Based in Goshen, IN and Madison, WI. pax duo aims to break preconceptions of contemporary percussion through collaboration and creation of new genre bending works. Their repertoire moves percussion music beyond the concert hall, incorporating lighting and electronics, and blending genres like indie, hip-hop, and funk into a contemporary classical context.

Join artist Ayanna Dozier live in person for a Q&A after the screening! Ayanna Dozier is a Brooklyn-based artist-writer working across film (both motion picture and still), performance, and installation. Her films have screened at film festivals across the world including Crossroads, Prismatic Ground, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, Open City Docs, and Aesthetica Film Festival where she was the recipient of Best Experimental in 2020 for her film Softer. Her work has been exhibited at Microscope Gallery, The Shed, Westbeth Gallery, Evening Hours, Anthology Film Archives, and the Block Museum amongst other places.
