Answers to common questions from students and instructors on testing hours and time limits, scheduling, and test day expectations.

Testing Hours and Time Limits

During the Semester When Classes are in Session

  • Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm, at the Main Campus and the Washington County Campus
  • Monday through Thursday, 9am to 4pm, at the Waukesha Campus and Fridays, 9am to 1pm.

During Semester Finals

  • Saturday, Monday through Saturday, 8am to 5pm, at all three campuses.
  • NOTE: Finals testing will be scheduled in blocks with specific start times of 8am (when a course final is scheduled before noon) or 1pm (when a course final is scheduled after 1pm). Due to the number of students who take final exams in the testing center, this form of scheduling ensures minimal distractions.

Sending Exams to ARC for Testing

Exam documents must be delivered to ARC at least 24 hours in advance of the student’s scheduled exam or final.

Delivery options include: uploading the exam to PROFconnect or instructional staff dropping of the exam in the main office.

Return options include: ARC staff uploading the completed exam to PROFconnect, Instructional staff picking up the exam from the main office, or the student returning the exam to the instructor in a sealed envelope.

Scheduling Exams in ARC

  • Once an instructor completes the Alternative Testing Agreement, students are encouraged to schedule all exams (including Finals) as soon as they receive the course syllabus with exam dates listed.
  • All exams and quizzes to be taken in ARC’s testing center should be scheduled within 7 days prior to the day/time of the course exam.
  • All regular exams should be scheduled at the same time as the course and within ARC testing hours. The only exceptions are when there is a class conflict or when a course exam falls outside of ARC testing hours.
    • In the case of a class conflict, when one course exam or final overlaps the time of another, the student should discuss this with the instructor(s) and come to an agreed time to take the exam outside of the course time but within ARC Testing Center hours. Once agreed, the student can then schedule their exam and should email ARC, copying the instructor(s), with the agreed upon time.
    • Work, doctor appointments, preferred dates and/or times, or vacations will not be considered as a class conflict.
  • All exams and FINALS to be taken in ARC’s testing center should be scheduled within 14 days prior to the last day of classes.
  • No exams are given on Study Day.
  • ARC does not provide testing after the hours listed above. If a student must take an exam after-hours, the student and the instructor should discuss and decide on another time within ARC testing hours. Once agreed, the student can then schedule their exam and should email ARC, copying the instructor, with the agreed upon time.
  • No late testing requests will be approved by ARC’s Testing Staff. In this case, students should speak with their Access Specialist.

Allotted Testing Times

Testing time accommodations vary according to each individual student’s accommodation plan. When completing an Alternative Testing Agreement, instructors need only enter the original testing time (the amount of time other students receive) for an exam or final. Our office will calculate the additional time for the ARC student.

If an instructor is proctoring their own exam, calculate additional time according to the following information:

  • When a student is approved for time and a half, the calculation is the original testing time (the amount of time other students receive) + half the original testing time. For example, a 30 minute exam calculates as 45 minutes (30+15) for time and a half.
  • When a student is approved for double time, the calculation is the original testing time (the amount of time other students receive) x 2. For example, a 30 minute exam calculates as 60 minutes (30×2) for double time.

Test Day in the ARC Testing Center

  • Late arrival translates the number of minutes a student is late to the number of minutes taken off their total testing time.
  • Arrival of more than 15 minutes late will result in forfeiture of the scheduled exam time and the exam will be returned to the instructor. Rescheduling of the exam will only be allowed with written approval from the instructor in an email to archelp@uwm.edu.
  • Students will leave all non-permitted items, such as backpacks, cell phones, calculators (when not approved by the instructor), etc. in a cubby outside the Testing Center.
