University Recreation (UREC) is excited to announce a renovation coming to the Weight Room portion of the Klotsche Center Fitness Center. The weight room will receive updates to the flooring that allow for more exercise opportunities and space for future equipment. Additionally, a new rig system will be installed that provide more functionality in a smaller footprint.

“Investing in these improvements to the UREC Weight Room will bring UW-Milwaukee closer to the standard of peer institutions,” says El Russell, Fitness Program Supervisor for University Recreation. “Our most frequent weight room users cite this change as a net positive for the future of our facility, and we are excited to create a better environment for our students and members.”

“The work being done in the UREC Weight Room this summer will have a positive impact to our campus,” says Heath Powell, Deputy Director of University Recreation. “We’ve factored sustainability into this project planning as well. The current floor in the weight room will not be discarded for waste, and machines and systems being replaced with our new rig will be donated back to other UWM departments that benefit the student population.”

The flooring, known as ECORE, will benefit the weight room with its utility to provide workouts without the need for bulky platforms. ECORE provides better noise reduction and durability to handle heavy equipment and daily use. The new rig system from MATRIX will feature 12 bays with full support for standard bench press, squat, and deadlifting stations. Additional modular attachments and pull up bars add versatility in a single footprint.

The renovation process will begin once the Klotsche Center and Pavilion close to prepare for the steam shut down week across campus, starting Saturday, May 23. UREC will reopen for summer hours starting on Monday, June 1. Updates to the weight room are expected to carry into the month of July.

Parts of the weight room will be relocated to provide students and members with opportunities to continue their workouts through the month of June. More information about equipment location and availability can be found on UREC’s Summer Weight Room Information Page.
