Veteran finds a comfortable fit at military-friendly UWM

Kaleb Cravillion, a nontraditional student from Marshfield, Wisconsin, joined the U.S. Army and served for six years before deciding to return to college.

“Doing research, I decided I wanted to find a military-friendly college that cares about veterans and does it the right way. I was really impressed when I was more of UWM. They have my best interests in mind.”

UWM is Wisconsin’s leader in educating veterans and serves more veterans and military-service members than any other college or university in Wisconsin. The UWM Military & Veterans Resource Center (MAVRC) is the go-to campus resource center and social hub for veteran and military-service students. MAVRC works closely with other UWM departments, such as the Miliary Education Benefits Office and the Student Veterans of America, to provide veteran students the resources they need to succeed.

During his time at UWM, Cravillion has been part of Nonprof-IT, which is a program that pairs teams of IT students with nonprofits who need IT solutions, like a new website or redesign. Students receive academic credit for their work. “You’re basically a project manager for the whole semester and you get this really unique leadership experience,” he says.

After graduating this semester, Cravillion will stay at UWM to begin his master’s in information science and technology and continue to work for the Nonprof-IT program.
