UWM wins, heads to Horizon League basketball semifinals in Indianapolis

BJ Freeman scored 32 points and led UWM to a 95-84 road victory over UW-Green Bay in the Horizon League tournament quarterfinals Thursday night.

The victory sends UWM to the semifinals of the Horizon League conference tournament in Indianapolis on Monday. The Panthers will face Northern Kentucky at 8:30 p.m. in a game televised on ESPN2.

Oakland and Cleveland State face off in the other semifinal game Monday at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. The semifinal winners will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

“Really nice to get another crack at that,” said head coach Bart Lundy. “We are clicking pretty good and have a lot of guys giving us great contributions.”

UWM cracked open a close game with an 18-3 run midway through the second half. Freeman added eight rebounds to his game-high 32 points, while Faizon Fields had 19 points and nine rebounds, and Erik Pratt scored 15 points for UWM.

The UWM women’s basketball team lost 70-60 to Wright State on Thursday, knocking the Panthers out of the conference tournament. Anna Lutz led UWM with 17 points, while Kamy Peppler scored 14.
