UWM Experts Directory retired; new process for connecting faculty with external media

University Relations has retired the UWM Experts Directory, previously found at uwm.edu/experts, in light of the phaseout of the software in which it was created.

Journalists and others who visit that URL will now be directed to the redesigned For Media page, which includes two to four featured experts who can speak to reporters on topics currently in the news. The redesigned page also includes a few lists of experts who can add perspective on the biggest news stories of the moment and directions on how to contact University Relations’ Media Services team to find additional experts on a wide array of topics.

In addition, two to four experts are featured in a monthly e-newsletter sent to more than 200 journalists in Wisconsin. The newsletter features experts who can discuss issues expected to be in the news in the upcoming month.

The emphasis on promoting experts who can discuss timely topics reflects the Media Services’ experience with external media. Most journalists who contact the university are looking for experts who can speak on topics already in the news and who can do the interview within a matter of hours.

To be featured as an expert, faculty members in the humanities and social sciences, Architecture, Peck School, Helen Bader School, Education and SOIS should contact Angela McManaman. Those in the hard sciences, Freshwater Sciences, Lubar School, CEAS, Nursing, Health Sciences and Public Health should contact Laura Otto. Faculty members in the new College of General Studies should contact Sue Bausch.
