Upset bid falls short for UWM men’s basketball team

The No. 8 seed UWM men’s basketball team came within two minutes of another big upset but couldn’t hold off a rally from top-seeded Cleveland State and fell, 71-65, in the semifinals of the Horizon League tournament Monday night.

A basket by Deandre Gholston with 1:56 left in the game gave UWM a 64-61 lead, but Cleveland State closed the game with a 10-1 run to end the Panthers’ season.

UWM had knocked off No. 2 seed Wright State with a historic 24-point comeback last week to reach the Horizon League semifinals.

“Disappointing end to our year,” UWM coach Pat Baldwin said. “We were right on the cusp of doing some really good things. … Our guys have been stellar in the way they’ve handled themselves. I love our guys – every single one of them. Absolutely proud of them and their effort.”

Josh Thomas led UWM with a career high 25 points, while Amir Allen led with his career high of 15 rebounds.
