Through the partnership, UWM has made “transformational changes to the way we promote student success,” Chancellor Mark Mone said.
Scholarships and support help bring hundreds of students back to UWM to complete their degrees.
UWM Chancellor Mark Mone celebrated UWM’s successes during his 2023 Plenary address and emphasized the importance of UWM employees refocusing their efforts on student success.
The chancellor hosted a panel discussion with representatives of five partnerships that aim to knit together resources and conduct research into best practices to remove obstacles and close the racial achievement gaps in education at various levels.
The award recognizes the company’s longstanding support of UWM and its students. WEC Energy Group is UWM’s top corporate donor, having contributed more than $11 million to UWM causes.
Three-quarters of the gift will be used to endow programs that enhance student success, such as emergency and retention grants, coaching, staffing and tools for advising. The remaining portion will provide support for scholarships.
A group of donors has committed $2.1 million to an initiative at UWM dedicated to ensuring that students of color graduate at the same rate as white students to help eliminate long-standing equity gaps.
In his annual plenary address, the chancellor said that the university is facing a number of challenges but is uniquely positioned to help solve many of the region’s problems.
UWM has forged partnerships with academic and industry partners aimed at increasing diversity in the workforce and driving economic prosperity in southeastern Wisconsin.
