As a council member, Tapia will meet with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto twice a year and with other government officials when appropriate. The council works to design policy for the improvement of living standards and integration for migrants in their host societies.

Since 2001, Tapia has worked on partnerships with the Mexican government, most recently as a member of a task force aimed at bringing a Mexican Consulate to Milwaukee to help support its growing Mexican population.

His appointment to the council will create access to Mexico’s education institutions, government, health and business sectors, Tapia said.
