Experts available to assist media with back-to-school stories

MILWAUKEE _ Many students and teachers are getting ready for their first full year of in-person learning after instruction shifted online because of the pandemic. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee faculty and staff can help media working on stories about all levels of education, from elementary to higher education, as the 2021-22 academic year approaches. For instance:

  • Tania Mertzman Habeck says summer is a good time for parents to encourage their children to read in a relaxed atmosphere, and to let them follow their interests. Reading during the school year can be intense, the associate professor says, so it’s OK to focus more on quantity instead of quality during the summer.
  • What might it be like to return to the classroom? Jennifer Brownson, a senior lecturer, can offer tips for parents to help their children get used to in-person learning, such as role-playing what those experiences might be like.
  • Carrie Fleider, the director of University Counseling Services, can talk about issues related to mental health and higher education.
