A troupe of Mexican dancers in Milwaukee for Mexican Fiesta visited UWM on Wednesday, before their scheduled performances Saturday and Sunday.

The 27 young dancers and three adult leaders from the group, Mahuatzi, met with Spanish-speaking UWM employees who talked about UWM and its students, their jobs here, Latino culture in Milwaukee and the university’s international student population.

Mexican Fiesta arranged the visit with Javier Tapia, associate professor in the School of Education.

UWM employees who guided the students were: Alberto Maldonado, assistant director of admissions; Marilyn Vazquez and Tyler Thom, advisers in admissions and recruitment, Gabriela Dorantes, academic adviser in the Roberto Hernandez Center; and Leo Serrato, a junior in mechanical engineering who works in the Roberto Hernandez Center office.

“The students were very impressed with our campus and the different academic opportunities that are available,” Maldonado said.

The Mahuatzi Danza Group from Chihuahua will perform several times a day during Mexican Fiesta: http://mexicanfiesta.org/documents/Program2015EMAIL.pdf.
