Area code to be required for landline calls from campus

Users of on-campus landlines will soon be required to dial the area code for all calls. Previously, some users could make local calls without using the area code.

Users will now be required to dial 9, plus the 1-digit country code, the 3-digit area code and the 7-digit phone number to place a call using an on-campus landline (e.g.: 9+1+414+2291122). These changes have already been implemented and should be adopted right away. For on-campus landlines, dialing locally using 9 plus a 7-digit phone number will be retired Oct. 24, 2021 (e.g.: 9+2291122).

This change also applies to faxing, credit card machines, speed dials, modems, panic buttons, intercoms and more. Anything with programmed dialing will need to be re-programmed by following the device’s set-up instructions before Oct. 24, 2021.

Please note: This change does not affect Teams calling, UWM-issued cell phones or 4-digit dialing currently in use (e.g.: 1122).
