The Map Society of Wisconsin is on indefinite pause.

The Map Society of Wisconsin was formed in 1996 to bring together people interested in all aspects of maps and mapping–their history, uses, production, and preservation regardless of format. The society holds its meetings at the AGSL, usually featuring a presentation accompanied by a related exhibit drawn from the library’s collections. Socializing and refreshments precede each meeting.

A Previously Unknown and Unexplored Land Mass: Looking For (and Laughing At) the Midwest”

Presented by:

Amanda MurphyaoPhD Candidate School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada

The Midwest is a region that is difficult to define.  What states are included?  Does the idea of the Midwest change over time?  What does it mean to be Midwestern?  As part of her doctoral research into “carto-caricatures,” Amanda Murphyao (a 2019 AGSL Research Fellow) has explored the varied cartographic representations and geographic definitions of the Midwest.  Using examples from atlases, popular culture, and political cartoons, Amanda will address the question: what is the Midwest?

Join us at 1:30 for socializing & light refreshments before the talk.
