Hebrew Epitaphs From Eastern Europe: At the Intersection of Bookish and Popular Culture

February 24, 2016 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Hebrew gravestone inscriptions from western Ukraine, from the 16th to the 20th centuries, serve as an important source for Jewish history, literature, and anthropology. Hebrew epitaphs as a genre stand at the intersection of Hebrew/written/official culture and Yiddish/oral/everyday/popular. Prof. Michael Nosonovsky will discuss the Hebrew/Yiddish orthography code-switching in the epitaphs, the use of direct and modified biblical quotations, and the place of the epitaphs between “high” and the folk literature, and between official and popular religion.
