Emile H. Mathis Gallery
About
The UWM Emile H. Mathis Gallery houses the UWM Art Collection and is located in Room 170 of Mitchell Hall on the UWM campus. The gallery serves both the campus and greater Milwaukee community by providing access to the UWM Art Collection through exhibitions. The gallery’s objective complements the University’s educational and outreach mission. As envisioned, both serve as pedagogical vehicles for enhancing art education at all levels, fostering inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary relationships, and creating community partnerships.
The UWM Art Collection provides an exceptional opportunity for students to acquire firsthand knowledge of museum practice. The Art History Department is committed to the training of graduate students in the theoretical and practical issues that encompass the field of art museum studies. The UWM Art Collection offers excellent opportunities for instruction and research, as well as exhibitions organized through graduate seminars and thesis exhibitions planned and curated by MA candidates on the Curatorial Track.
Principal funding for the gallery is generously provided by the Friends of Art History and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
