UWM undergrads show their research muscle

More than 250 UWM students from across disciplines presented results of their research on April 29 at the annual symposium sponsored by the UWM Office of Undergraduate Research.

The projects included oral and poster presentations – and even a dance performance – on topics as diverse as the AIDS virus in green monkeys, tiny houses and blending dance with motion-tracking software.

The work displayed was just a slice of undergraduates’ research on campus. Every year, more than 900 students work directly with faculty on various projects. About half of the students receive academic credit for their work; others are paid through external and internal grants, including the Support for Undergraduate Research Fellows grants awarded by the Office of Undergraduate Research.

A panel of judges chose 14 teams for ribbons of merit at this year’s event:

  • Nicole Thunes
  • Christal Spaeth
  • Alexandra Stott
  • William Langhoff
  • Liv Heidenreich
  • Sara Schuler and Fred Kaems
  • Nathaniel Burks, Dylan Bernard, Hannah Drake, Mary Seer and Caroline Siegworth
  • Anastasia Hayward and Eliza Hermsmeier Fiscus
  • Ndeye Drame
  • Grace Nicora
  • Mike Sportiello
  • Damon Hinz
  • Morgan Longreis
  • Travis Manser

The students did some judging of their own, choosing Doug Steeber, associate professor of biological sciences, as Mentor of the Year.
