Submissions Needed for the Annual UWM Student Research Paper and Project Contest

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Women’s & Gender Studies hosts the annual UWM Student Research Paper & Project Contest.

Guidelines

The application process is now open for the “Women’s and Gender Studies Paper and Project Award.”

When you log into the portal, if you haven’t already done so, you will fill out or update your general profile and upload the latest copy of your unofficial UWM transcript. If you need instructions on how to obtain a copy of your UWM transcript through PAWS, please see: https://uwm.edu/onestop/your-student-record/transcripts-verifications/.

Once your general profile is updated, you may apply specifically to the “Women’s and Gender Studies Paper and Project Award.” If you meet the qualifications to apply, it will show up on your home page dashboard, or you can search for it by name within the portal. Completing the general application also makes your file available for review for other UWM scholarships for which you may qualify.

Undergraduate or graduate research papers or projects having to do with women, gender, sexuality, feminism or feminist thinking which were completed for UWinteriM, Spring, Summer, or Fall 2020 courses at UWM are eligible for entry. All applications are done through the UWM Scholarship Portal. Access the application here to read more details about these awards. Prizes will be awarded in the following four categories:

  • Undergraduate Research Paper: This paper, a minimum of five, double-spaced, typed pages, must demonstrate original thinking and critical engagement with the use of primary and/or secondary sources. (Book reports will not be accepted.)
  • Undergraduate Project: Projects could include, for example, an individual piece or portfolio of artwork, video production, curriculum design, musical composition, architectural or engineering design, original literary piece such as a poem or short story, or essay based primarily on personal or autobiographical reflection. Please include an abstract.  It is the responsibility of the student to find an appropriate way to digitally submit this project due to COVID-19 restrictions.
  • Graduate Research Paper: This paper, approximately 10-20 double-spaced, typed pages will likely utility primary sources such as documents, statistical data, or interviews in an original research project written for a graduate course or seminar, or in an independent study.
  • Graduate Project: Projects could include, for example, an individual piece or portfolio of artwork, video production, curriculum design, musical composition, architectural or engineering design, or original literary piece such as a poem or short story. Projects should demonstrate a professional level of expertise. Please include an abstract.  It is the responsibility of the student to find an appropriate way to digitally submit this project due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Submission guidelines:

  • Written work must be typed, double-spaced, with a one inch margin: all pages should be numbered consecutively (including the bibliography). Your name should not appear anywhere on your paper or your abstract.
  • All projects should be presented in as professional a manner as possible. For example, photos should be matted.  It is the responsibility of the student to find an appropriate way to digitally submit this project due to COVID-19 restrictions.
  • The paper or project submitted for consideration may be a revision of the original submitted for the course.

Submission Deadline

All materials must be received in Women’s & Gender Studies, at wgs@uwm.edu by March 15, 2021.

Judging and Awards

All entries are judged anonymously, and all judges’ decisions are final.
