Priority Deadlines

To be assured of consideration by the USP Student Affairs Committee in time to begin the semester that you wish, applicants should apply no later than the priority deadline, listed below. If space permits we continue to review applications beyond the priority deadline, though funding decisions will have passed. The entire application for either the MS or PhD is completed online at the corresponding link below:

Applying to the Master’s or Ph.D. Program

Master’s Degree Program in Urban Studies

To apply to the Master’s Degree Program, the applicant needs to complete the following through the online application system, Panthera:

  1. Complete the Graduate School’s Online MS Application that includes a reason statement for graduate study, transcript requests, and an application fee.
  2. Using the online application system, identify at least two recommenders to submit letters of recommendation on your behalf. Letters should be from current or former professors who can comment on an applicant’s previous academic performance.
  3. Complete the Fellowship and Financial Assistance Information Form.
  4. Submission of a writing sample, although not required for the Master’s degree application, is recommended. Submit written work which demonstrates your ability to do original research and/or to critically analyze and evaluate the work of others.
  5. Submission of Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores to the Graduate School (Must be taken within the last 5 years), although not required for the Master’s degree application, is recommended if applying for funding. However, the decision to not include GRE scores does not preclude an applicant from receiving a funding award.

Doctoral Degree Program in Urban Studies

To apply to the Doctoral Degree Program, the applicant needs to the complete the following through the online application system, Panthera:

  1. Complete the Graduate School’s Online PhD Application that includes a reason statement for graduate study, transcript requests, and an application fee.
  2. Using the online application system, identify at least three recommenders to submit letters of recommendation on your behalf. At least two of the three letters should be from current or former professors who can comment on an applicant’s previous academic performance.
  3. Submit your Master’s paper or other written work online, which demonstrates your ability to do original research and/or to critically analyze and evaluate the work of others. This may include published work and more than one submission may be uploaded. If a work is coauthored or with multiple authors, a second solo authored work must be included as well.
  4. Submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores to the UWM Graduate School. Scores must be within the last 5 years.
  5. Submit your Urban Studies Essay (Addendum) online. The essay should be at least two pages and not more than three pages in length, double spaced with normal margins.
