To improve security and ensure usage of multi-factor authentication (MFA) UWM is standardizing the list of applications used to access campus email (Office 365). Starting March 30, 2021, recommended applications for accessing your UWM email and calendar include Outlook apps (Outlook on the web, desktop, and mobile), Mac Mail and Calendar, and iOS Mail and Calendar. Please review our KnowledgeBase article for the full details of this change.
If you are using a mail client outside of the ones mentioned above, please review our resources below to ensure your device can access your UWM email after March 30. Examples of mail and calendar apps that will no longer connect to Office 365 include Thunderbird, Android Mail, Android Calendar, and older versions of iOS Mail and iOS Calendar. Please note: After March 30, any mail or calendar client outside of those recommended may no longer work or would need to be reconfigured.
Why is this happening?
Modern Authentication and Basic Authentication are terms for connection methods between a client (for example, your laptop or your phone) and the Office 365 servers. Currently, UWM’s Office 365 environment allows users to authenticate with Office 365 services using both Basic Authentication as well as Modern Authentication. To improve security and ensure required usage of MFA, UWM will be fully moving to utilize Modern Authentication for Office 365 services and will disable support for Basic Authentication on March 30, 2021. Microsoft has announced the retirement of Basic Authentication and this transition will improve security and ensure that MFA is being fully utilized.
