UWM gives military doctor the tools for his career

Dr. Paul Hemmer (BS Biological Sciences ’85) always knew he wanted to serve others. Looking back at his career he says UWM gave him the perfect start to becoming a doctor. Currently he’s a professor of medicine and vice chair of educational programs at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Department of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. He also maintains an internal medicine practice, seeing patients at Walter Reed Medical Center. Hemmer served in the military from 1991 to 2012, retiring with the rank of colonel. He lectures around the world and has received numerous awards for his outstanding service.

Hemmer received the lifetime achievement award at the 2018 UWM Alumni Association Awards.
