UWM wins first postseason tournament game since 2006

Led by BJ Freeman’s record-setting performance, the UWM men’s basketball team beat Stetson 87-83 in overtime Sunday in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The victory was UWM’s first in a postseason tournament since beating Oklahoma in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2006, the year after its run to the Sweet 16. UWM now plays Charlotte in the CBI quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. Monday. The game will be broadcast on FloHoops and 101.7 FM The Truth.

The CBI semifinals and final game will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Freeman scored a career high 43 points Sunday, breaking the CBI record of 39 and second in UWM history only to Von McDade’s 50-point outing in 1990.

“He did have a special game and we needed every bit of it,” UWM coach Bart Lundy said. “They were box-and-1 a good bit of that second half, and he was able to make play after play. BJ is a special player, and he’s really given his heart and soul to us.”

The victory came on the one-year anniversary of Lundy’s hiring.
