Tower removed from roof of Sandburg Hall

The radio tower atop the Sandburg Hall North Tower was removed Saturday morning by Higgins Tower and Midwest Helicopter Lift Service, which were working on behalf of the state of Wisconsin.

The radio tower, which was more than 250 feet tall, was airlifted in sections from Sandburg’s roof to the nearby Chapman/Enderis parking lot. Surrounding areas and buildings were closed to pedestrian and road traffic during the removal.

The little-used radio tower was becoming increasingly obsolete, so removing it was a safer and more cost-effective option than repairing and maintaining it. Private organizations and government agencies who remained interested in its services have been accommodated with other solutions.
