Microsoft Authenticator app to discontinue Apple Watch support

Microsoft recently announced the Microsoft Authenticator iOS app for Apple Watch will be discontinued in January 2023. The app is one of the available methods for multi-factor authentication (MFA) at UWM.

Microsoft shared this update on its FAQ page:

“In the upcoming Authenticator release in January 2023 for iOS, there will be no companion app for watchOS due to it being incompatible with Authenticator security features. This means you won’t be able to install or use Authenticator on Apple Watch. We therefore recommend that you delete Authenticator from your Apple Watch. This change only impacts Apple Watch, so you will still be able to use Authenticator on your other devices.”

The Microsoft Authenticator app will still be operational for UWM students, faculty and staff on other devices; this change only applies to Apple Watch. No other details have been shared at this time, and we will continue to provide IT updates on this topic.

Information on all authentication methods for Microsoft MFA can be found in our KnowledgeBase article. See UWM’s IT site for more on multi-factor authentication.
