Geek Week returns to UWM March 5-9

Geek Week will be taking over the UWM campus March 5-9 with dozens of events celebrating science, gaming, fiction and other bits of nerdy brilliance.

This year’s featured speaker is video game developer Mackey McCandlish. Best known for his work on Activision’s blockbuster “Call of Duty” series, his team broke away from the mega-publisher to found Respawn Entertainment, releasing the popular “Titanfall.” McCandlish will be talking about his experiences with game production and his outlook on game design at 6 p.m. March 6 in the Union Ballroom.

UWM is also hosting a panel exploring the role of comics and gaming in driving social change and a workshop on navigating the tough but exciting business of self-publishing.

Trivia hounds can show they’re worthy of the title of Maester at “Game of Thrones” trivia or stop by the Tournament of Champions to take on Chancellor Mark Mone.

The LGBT Resource Center will be hosting an Anime Ice Cream Social featuring a showing of an episode of “Yuri!!! On Ice” and “The Legend of Korra” as well as a GAYme Night focusing on video, board and card games.

For those who want to get off campus, there will be local tours including a STEM-centric exploration of Milwaukee and a trip to the Milwaukee Public Museum, as well as a geocaching hunt.

Other events include a screening of the new “Jumanji” film, an improv show, a Rubik’s Cube magician and Star Wars Cosmic Bowling. There will also be a number of craft projects and exhibitions around campus, including a Minecraft installation in the library.

A full list of events and activities can be found on Geek Week’s Facebook page.
