School Day drew a few thousand schoolchildren to UWM’s home ballpark, Franklin Field. After the weather presentation, the crowd saw UWM defeat Northern Illinois, 18-15. (Milwaukee Athletics photo)
The UWM baseball team’s first-ever School Day was a hit, as a few thousand schoolchildren gathered at Franklin Field to learn about weather and catch a game.
Brian Niznansky, chief meteorologist for WTMJ-TV and a proud UWM alum, gave a presentation before the game. He used the field scoreboard to demonstrate how the green screen works on TV, and he and Discovery World’s Therese “Rese” Cluck Schneider created a cloud with liquid nitrogen and boiling water (with a strong admonition: kids, don’t try this at home).
And then all kicked back and watched a slugfest, as UWM defeated Northern Illinois, 18-15.
