Actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio mentioned UWM in a tweet to his 16.4 million followers on Thursday.
“Want to stop climate change, @UWM? See #BeforeTheFlood at your University #BeforeYouVote,” DiCaprio tweeted.
The tweet referenced his National Geographic documentary about climate change, “Before the Flood,” which to screen at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Union Cinema. The showing was to be followed by a discussion led by Erick Shambarger, director of environmental sustainability for the City of Milwaukee.
In “Before the Flood,” DiCaprio speaks with scientists who highlight the damage to Earth as well as short and long-term solutions to reducing humans’ ecological footprint. The documentary comes after DiCaprio’s 2007 film about the environment, “The 11th Hour.”
UWM has long been concerned with the environment. Earlier this year the university earned a STARS Gold Rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, in which nearly 600 colleges and universities on six continents compete for top sustainability ratings.
