Construction roundup: UWM Student Union to reopen, Chemistry work continues

The UWM Student Union is expected to reopen on Friday, Sept. 2, with dining units planning to begin their services on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The Panther Shop, Books by eCampus, UWM Tech Store and PantherCard Office will operate from Bolton Hall through Sept. 1. All four offices are expected to reopen in the Student Union on Sept. 2.

Construction on the new Chemistry Building, between the Physics Building and the Lubar Entrepreneurship Center, will require the continued closure of the sidewalk on Kenwood Ave. through the academic year. Related utility work is underway between the old Chemistry Building and EMS, and that work may require temporary walkway closures, which will be announced as needed. Signage will be posted with route access.

Here are details on several other campus construction projects:

Northwest Quadrant (NWQ) renovations

The NWQ improvements are advancing in four buildings. Renovations within Building C and D have been completed to support Student Health Services, the School of Information Studies and a Nursing Simulation Center. Work in Building B continues, including window replacement, life safety updates and a new entrance. The demolition of Building A is underway. The walkway north of NWQ A remains closed.

Sandburg Hall West Tower renovations/Police Department relocation

West tower renovations will begin this fall and continue through next summer. While the West Tower will be closed to students, the rest of Sandburg Hall will remain unaffected. The tennis and basketball courts will be closed to support construction vehicles.

In addition, the Police Department will be relocating from Sandburg Halls to the Norris Building. As part of that, Norris will be renovated. The Police Department will temporarily move to the first floor of NWQ Building C next spring and summer, and the Police Department will stay in the temporary location until Norris renovations are complete.

Fountain water main project

Restoration of the fountain is set to be complete in early September, up to the east side of the Curtin Hall entrance. The semi-circular drive east of Curtin Hall, and the east side of Vogel will continue to be impacted through mid-September. The area east of the Golda Meir Library, near the fountain, will be completed by Sept. 2. Fencing and signage will direct traffic.

Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin Center (Klotsche Annex)

This $8.1 million project features a full-size basketball court, a basketball strength and conditioning center, video room, sports medicine and treatment center, and student-athlete lounge. The new Annex will also be connected to the Pavilion via an elevated a bridge. The project is anticipated to be complete in late 2022. Pavilion parking may be accessed from Edgewood; the Downer parking drive will remain closed for the fall semester until the project is completed.

Mitchell Hall exterior renewal

The Mitchell Hall exterior repairs and window replacement project includes brick and stone façade improvements and window replacement. Work will continue through the 2022-23 academic year, with major portions of the window replacement occurring during Winterim.

The parking lot behind Mitchell Hall, and the space around the building, will be impacted and often closed throughout the duration of project. While there will be construction vehicles on the sidewalks and grass, access to the sidewalks and stoops that lead directly to the entrances will be maintained as possible. Various building entrances will be temporarily closed as they are impacted by construction.

Kenilworth facade repair

Temporary metal bracing remains in place until the building undergoes a larger façade renovation project in the future. The bracing is not permanent but installed as a safety measure until the full façade improvement can take place. The bracing will be removed once the building façade is repaired.
