The UWM Food Center and Pantry has moved into a new space, Student Union Room 348, for the spring semester – the former home of the Kenwood Inn restaurant.
The pantry is open to students every fourth Monday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and every fourth Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Outside of those hours, students can also access the pantry by contacting staff in the Dean of Students office, LGBT Resource Center or the Inclusive Excellence Center.
The pantry is accepting donations of items such as canned fruits and vegetables, whole-grain pasta, canned tuna or chicken, whole-grain cereals and personal hygiene products. The full list operation dates and donation information can be found on the Student Association website.
The campus food pantry opened in its previous, temporary location last semester and has been accepting donations since August 2017. Initial efforts to address food insecurity began in 2016 when a student-wide survey revealed that roughly 50 percent of UWM students did not have enough food at some point during their enrollment.
In the time since, the program has raised almost $6,500 in monetary donations and collected over one ton of food through food drives. The “round up program,” which allows customers at all Union and Sandburg Residence Hall cash registers to round up their purchases to their nearest dollar, has raised almost $1,500.
