The Student Health and Wellness Center offers mental health and emotional well-being resources for UWM students, and here’s how you can help.
College student mental health has become a national concern. That’s why the Student Health and Wellness Center (formerly Norris Health Center) has put together a comprehensive list of the mental health and emotional well-being resources available to UWM students on campus and online. Starting with self-care practice, to more professional assistance, and even crisis support. As a faculty and staff member, you can help refer students to proper channels of support they need!
Some of the options available to students are:
Self-Care Wellness Hub: YOU@UWM
YOU@UWM is a one-stop hub for self-care tips, guidance and campus resources to support academics, well-being and social life. Students can check in with themselves, set goals and access UWM services anytime.
On-Campus Mindfulness Spots and Resources
If students need help with focus, stress or sleep, mindfulness can help. Students are invited to visit the website for campus mindfulness spaces, events and resources. Additionally, the Mindful Space at SHAW offers a peaceful spot to relax with a massage chair, VR goggles and happy lamps.
Peer-to-Peer Connections: Togetherall
Togetherall is an online platform where students connect virtually with peers on campus and across the country facing similar mental health challenges. Students can join other groups and communities that fit their needs.
Brief Conversations with a Counselor: Let’s Talk
If students are feeling stressed or dealing with personal issues, Let’s Talk offers a quick, informal virtual chat with SHAW counselor. These sessions are free, non-committal and last only 30 minutes.
Alcohol and Other Drug Support: BASICS
If substance use is affecting a student’s life, BASICS offers a confidential space to reflect and explore options for change. Learn more and schedule an appointment on the BASICS website.
SHAW Counseling Services offers in-person and virtual therapy for individuals, couples and groups, plus psychiatry and case management. Students should visit the website or call 414-229-7429, option 2, to schedule an appointment.
Virtual Therapy: Mantra Health
Mantra Health offers free teletherapy with evening and weekend appointments, plus identity-specific counselors. Students can visit the website and log in with their UWM email to create a free account.
If a student or a loved one of a student is facing a mental health crisis or in need of immediate support, they can call UW Mental Health Support 24/7 at 888-531-2142. Additionally, you can call this help line if you don’t know what to do for a student in the moment, but you know they need help.
