6 must-see events at UWM artists’ open house

Faculty members and students from the Peck School of the Arts will share their work with the public on Saturday, April 9, with art exhibits, film screenings, live music, theatre and dance performances, and more.

The annual Kenilworth Open Studios, which runs from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. at 2155 N Prospect Ave., includes free exhibits, activities and performances on six floors. Here’s a look at some highlights:

Room 345: Activist art

Kenilworth_Nicolas Lampert_af_d

Nicolas Lampert uses his art to create awareness of environmental and social justice issues. A co-founder of Climateprints.org, which enables artists to contribute posters and banners to environmental causes worldwide, he’ll have his studio open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Room 494: Old-time portraits

Kenilworth_Tintype_af_d

Photographers will shoot visitor portraits from noon to 2 p.m., using a modern version of the tintype process. In the 19th century, tintype artists created images by developing positives on tin plates. The process is different than film photography, in which negatives are used to create positive images.

4th floor elevator lobby: Handemade film demonstrations

Kenilworth_Film Demos_af_d

Graduate students in film will help guests create handmade films from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This interactive process is one of the first cinematographic film practices. Celluloid is placed on a plate and either burned or scraped off to create a motion picture. Once they’ve created a film, participants will watch their production as it is projected.

5th floor central lobby: Live electronic music

Kenilworth_MiLO_af_d

The Milwaukee Laptop Orchestra, MiLO, and TORCH, an orchestra of iPad performers, will perform new works from noon to 12:45 p.m. Don’t miss this unique collaboration.

Room 640: Dance and opera collaboration

Kenilworth_Wild_Space_Dance_Company_af_d

Receive a sneak peek of Wild Space Dance Company’s upcoming performance with the Milwaukee Opera Theatre from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. This open rehearsal features alumni, students and faculty members from UW-Milwaukee.

Room 508: Theater

Kenilworth_Orphan Train_af_d

Enjoy an interactive history of “Orphan Train,” a new play that follows the lives of parent-less children sent west on a train to find new homes. The presentation runs from 11 a.m. to noon.
