5. PhD Preliminary Exam Guidelines: CBHP (Young: 10 minutes)*
a. Proposed components
i. Take-home integrative review paper: Students conduct a comprehensive literature review related to their proposed dissertation topic, demonstrating their ability to synthesize existing research and identify gaps.
ii. Take-home research methods paper: Students design a study pertinent to their dissertation topic, showcasing their research planning skills.
iii. Oral exam: An evaluative discussion focusing on the student's integrative review and proposed research methods.
b. Key changes
i. Elimination of the 5-hour in-school, closed-book case study exam: This has been replaced with a take-home research methods paper on the student’s proposed dissertation topic, requiring them to design a study.
ii. Expansion of the exam period: The integrative review period has been increased from 4 weeks to 6 weeks. Eight weeks are allowed for the proposed research methods paper, overlapping with the integrative review period.
iii. Strengthened integration with the dissertation: The exam is designed to directly inform students’ dissertation proposals, making it a steppingstone rather than a separate hurdle.
