Digital Humanities Lab: Gamergate: Rebuilding after a Culture War

March 23, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Serious Play will be hosting a talk and panel discussion on Gamergate by Alexis Dalbey, Steve Cuff, and Rachel Kinnard in the Digital Humanities Lab in the 2nd Floor East Wing of the Golda Meir Library.

Gamergate was an online movement in 2014 that ultimately grew to represent misogyny and sexism in game culture in the media. The talk will discuss the origins of the movement, and the coverage and events that followed.

A very brief history of Gamergate will be presented including who game designer Zoe Quinn is, what the Zoe post is and how it relates to the movement, and how the idea of ethics in game journalism was constructed.

This will be followed by an even briefer overview of how Gamergate spun out from these initial events. Then the panel will open up and discuss various questions of culture, media and game theory and how it relates to the movement.

Please join us for a lively discussion!
