Room Condition Report
University Housing highly recommends all residents submit a Room Condition Report when moving into a suite / apartment / room each academic year and, also, if a room change occurs at any point during the year. If a resident chooses not to submit a report when taking occupancy of a suite / apartment / room, any damages that may have occurred prior to their occupancy could be charged to them as the new occupant at the completion of their contract.
Residents should complete their Room Condition Report within 10 days of moving in through their Housing Portal. After logging in, click on Room Condition Report at the top of the page to submit.
Roommate/Suitemate Agreement
Whether you have a roommate or just additional suitemates, you are bound to have a great experience living in the Residence Halls at UW-Milwaukee! One of the most important experiences of residents’ time on campus is living with other residents.
Roommate/suitemates can be the source of anywhere from deep friendship to chronic aggravation, depending on the relationship they form. Having a good relationship with those you live with takes effort. University Housing has developed an Online Roommate/Suitemate Agreement to help you and the ones you live with negotiate living and learning together so you can be successful.
University Housing values inclusivity, community, adaptability, responsibility, and excellence (ICARE). Seen throughout the agreement will be the associated policies that you agreed to follow by living in University Housing. Please ensure that these policies are a part of your conversation with your roommate/suitemates while completing the agreement.
Step 1
Take time to meet and get to know who you are living with. What is their major? What are some common interests and hobbies you share? Why did you choose to come to UWM? What are you hoping to get out of this experience?
Step 2
Think about your ideal living style and what your expectations are for sharing a space. The more upfront and direct you can be about your style, the better able you will be to articulate your needs if situations arise.
Step 3
Set up a time with your RA to fill out this agreement.
Some subjects to consider before completing your suitemate agreement include:
Cleanliness – how do you like your room to appear? How will you organize the cleaning schedule for shared spaces?
Study environment – do you need a quiet environment to study? When do you study?
Use of your possessions – Are you okay with someone borrowing your things? What are things you are willing to share?
TV/music use – When do you watch TV? When do you listen to music? Do you use headphones or prefer to use speakers? What type of music do you listen to? Are there any shows you watch regularly?
Communication style – When you are stressed how do you respond? What do you need when you are upset? Are you comfortable approaching those with whom you disagree? How do you approach that person?
Socializing – How often do you go out? Are you going to be around on the weekends? What do you like to do for fun?
Sleeping – When do you go to sleep? When do you get up? Are you a light or heavy sleeper? What is okay for your roommate to do when you are sleeping in the room? What is not okay?
Room temperature – Do you like the room hot/cold? Do you like the window open?
Safety and security – What are some important considerations you have when thinking about the safety and security of yourself and your belongings? What about safety due to COVID-19?
Step 4
Sit down and talk to those you live with. If there are differences between your individual preferences, discuss those. Be flexible and try to agree on how to resolve those differences now. As you fill out the agreement, be as specific as possible. It will make it less awkward to resolve conflicts that may arise as the year goes on.
Step 5
Find a time for you and your suitemates to meet to complete the roommate/suitemate agreement within the Housing Portal. If you need assistance, please reach out to your RA to help start the conversation. Only one submission is required, however all suitemates need to be present when completing the form – each of you will be required to acknowledge the agreement. After completing the form each person will be able to view the agreement on their Housing Portal. If you have questions about this, please reach out to your RA before the deadline.
