Contracting Closes at 11:59pm Friday, May 1st.
As of 11:59pm on Friday, May 1, 2026, University Housing has stopped accepting Residence Hall Contracts for the 2026-2027 Academic Year. If you do not have a submitted contract or a submitted exemption at this time, you will be given an automatic exemption from the UWM Residency Requirement and may pursue other housing options through the Off-Campus Resource Center. We do acknowledge that we will have cancellations over the next coming months and encourage you to place yourself on our residence hall wait list through the Housing Portal if you still wish to live with us in University Housing. We will offer contracts based on the wait list as spaces become available.

General Safety Information

As a student at UWM, your safety is a top priority. UWM is full of resources and people to help in an emergency if you’re in crisis or just need someone to listen. We’re here for you.

Natural Disaster/ Emergency Preparation

General Emergency Preparedness

It is the policy of the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee to immediately notify the campus community upon confirmation of a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students, employees or visitors on campus.

Emergency Preparation for Your Car

Keep a warm blanket, water, food, and a flashlight in your car in case of emergencies. A roadside safety kit is also useful to keep in your car. In the winter, include an ice/snow scraper, foldable shovel, and a pair of gloves.

Tornados

Make sure you know where to go in your apartment in case of a tornado. The basement or an inside room without windows on the lowest level of the building are the safest place to go. If you live in a large apartment building, your landlord likely has instructions on where to go in the event of a tornado or fire.

Fire & Carbon Monoxide

Check your fire and carbon monoxide alarms (these may be combined as one alarm in some buildings) at least every 6 months, although every month is better. Plan a few safe escape routes in case of a fire in your building. Clean out the lint trap in your dryer every time you use it to prevent fires!

Renters Insurance

Purchasing renters’ insurance is an important way to protect your belongings in the event of an emergency such as a fire or flood as your landlord is not liable for items that get damaged or destroyed.
