The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee is one of the nation’s top research universities. In fact, designated a R1 Institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, UWM ranks in the top three percent of universities nationally.

Federal support plays a key role in this research and in maintaining this status. In FY 2020, the university had $62.7 million in federal research awards. Federal programs also continue to provide financial support to UWM’s students.

Since 2013, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has received over $350 million in federal awards, with almost 1,300 unique awards.
