Welcome to the Panther family! We’re excited that you’ll be attending UWM and becoming part of the School of Freshwater Sciences. Below you’ll find helpful information for new freshmen.

Math and English Placement

All incoming freshmen must complete their course placement requirement before registering for New Student Orientation. If you submitted your ACT or SAT scores to UWM, you’ll receive placements for your first-semester Math and English courses. If you didn’t submit ACT or SAT scores or if you don’t think the placements reflect what you know, you can use our free online placement tools to help determine your first-semester Math and English placements. More information at UWM’s Freshman Course Placement website.

New Student Orientation

After you’ve completed your Math and English placement requirement and paid your new freshman fee, you’ll be able to register for New Student Orientation. During New Student Orientation, you’ll learn more about academic and social life on campus. Before departing, you’ll meet with your advisor to register for first semester courses.

Get Involved!

From the moment you move into the dorms in late August, you’re at home here at UWM! The best way to set yourself up for lasting success is to get involved, and we’ve got several ways in which you can do so once you’ve arrived on campus. Get involved in a student organization or participate in faculty-led undergraduate research.
