Liv Watkins Hwang Named as UWM Vice Chancellor for Marketing & Communications

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to announce that Olivia (Liv) Watkins Hwang will serve as UW-Milwaukee’s next Vice Chancellor for Marketing & Communications, starting December 19, 2022.

The Vice Chancellor for Marketing & Communications reports directly to me, is a member of the Chancellor’s Executive Cabinet, and is the chief executive and administrative officer for the planning and execution of all actions and initiatives across our three campuses for integrated marketing and communication, web, print and copy, licensing, and brand strategy. Working closely with other university units, the vice chancellor will lead a comprehensive and proactive university-wide marketing, communication, and branding strategy that elevates UWM’s reputation and brand, maximizes demand for the university’s educational programs, drives student enrollment and retention, achieves revenue growth for the university, ensures maximum effectiveness of marketing strategy and investments, and secures financial and other resources. The role also oversees the marketing partnerships which advance UWM. The Division of Marketing & Communications (MarComm) has about 50 staff members and a $4.5M budget.

Liv brings 15 years of significant marketing and communications experience to this position, including her current role as Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Wisconsin Department of Administration, in which she advises state government leadership on marketing and communication regarding pandemic recovery efforts, and transformation of the state workforce and real estate portfolio. Before moving to Wisconsin, Liv served in several statewide and national communications roles, including vice president of communications for Choices Coordinated Care Solutions and director of media and communications for the Louisiana Department of Health. She also served as the lead communications director for the State of Louisiana’s response efforts following the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

I am delighted to appoint Liv to this position following a national search that yielded a strong pool, and a process that included significant campus input. My thanks go to Dr. Elana Levine, Professor of Media, Cinema and Digital Studies, Department of English, in the College of Letters and Science, for her strong leadership as chair of the search and screen committee for this position. I also thank the search committee members and staff who supported them.

In addition, I extend my gratitude to Chief Marketing Officer Michelle Johnson and Director of External and Government Relations Keri Duce who served as interim co-leads for the division of University Relations and Communications (recently reorganized with a new name of Marketing & Communications/MarComm) since the summer of 2021.

Many exciting things are happening at UWM every day, and I am confident that Liv’s talents and aptitude for relationship building will be an asset to effectively sharing our campuses’ accomplishments and opportunities with wide audiences. Please join me in giving Liv a warm Panther welcome when she joins us in December.

Best regards,
