Mark previously served UW-Milwaukee in several administrative and governance roles, including 17 years (1997-2014) as Associate Dean for the Lubar College and 11 years as chancellor (2014-2025). Major philanthropic records were established, and the physical footprint of the campus was transformed with 16 new or renovated buildings, including the Chemistry building, Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin Center, Innovation Campus Accelerator Building, and the renovated Student Union and Northwest Quad Health Sciences.
As noted by the Universities of Wisconsin, “Mark shepherded UWM through an awakening of its national reputation as one of America’s top research universities four times running, a Carnegie-classified community-engaged institution recognized for its access mission, a Princeton Review ‘Best Midwest’ university that is also military-friendly and LGBTQ+-friendly, and that has an APLU Economic and Innovation Prosperity designation, a Department of Education Green Ribbon Award, and is ranked in the top 3.1% in the world by the Center for World University Rankings.”
