UWM alum Basha Harris (BFA 2016, Jewelry & Metalsmithing) is featured in the latest issue of Metalsmith, a magazine published by the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG). Harris explains to Metalsmith’s Rachel Reichart how the legacy of prolific Milwaukee artist Mary Nohl inspires her own work.
In the article, Harris describes how she adopted Nohl’s artistic philosophy and uses it to make abstract works. Harris explores her practice by relying on intuition and emotion rather than following contemporary standards.
“With similar rigor and curiosity, Harris’s practice, much like Nohl’s, moved away from the pursuit of perfection and towards a more scrappy, intuitive way of creating. This kind of working is not necessarily easier; it resists the rigid and time-consuming expectations often associated with working with metal.” Reichart said. “Rather than following a highly planned approach, Harris allows the material, her circumstances, and the tools at hand to dictate the outcome.”
