Journal Sentinel highlights UWM theatre student in Skylight’s Gypsy

Kaegi does the middle splits in a frilly orange dress. She is in front of a barnyard-themed set and surrounded by two of her male co-stars.

UWM Theatre junior Sophie Kaegi plays the bubbly June in Skylight Music Theatre’s production of Gypsy: A Musical Fable. Inspired by the memoir of burlesque entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee, the classic musical explores the complicated relationships between an ambitious stage mother and her daughters.

In a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel review, Jim Higgins praises the production’s theatricality and highlights performances by its cast, including students recruited from UWM.

“Thrice-divorced Rose tries everything she can to turn her daughters into vaudeville stars, starting with the bubbly June (Sophie Kaegi) and later the shy Louise (Mona Swain),” Higgins writes.

Gypsy runs through Oct. 18 at the Broadway Theatre Center. For performance information, visit Skylight Music Theatre. To read the full review, visit the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
