Biography

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, pianist Elena Abend has performed with all the major orchestras of her country, including recording with the Filarmonica Nacional. Ms. Abend received her Bachelor and Master degrees from the Juilliard School and awarded the William Schuman Prize upon graduation. She has performed at venues such as the Purcell Room in London’s Royal Festival Hall, Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Academy of Music with the Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as the renowned Wigmore Hall in London, Toulouse Conservatoire, Theatre Luxembourg, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C., Chicago Cultural Center, Merkin Concert Hall in New York, Atlanta Historical Society, the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee and the Teatro Municipal, Teatro Nacional and Teatro Teresa Carren~o in her native Venezuela. More performances include Ravinia and Marlboro Music Festivals, live broadcasts on Philadelphia’s WFLN, The Dame Myra Hess Concert Series on Chicago’s WFMT and Wisconsin Public Radio at the Elvehjem Museum in Madison.

An avid chamber music collaborator, she has performed with Frankly Music, Present Music, Chamber Music Milwaukee, Faculty Artist Series, Fine Arts Quartet and the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra. Most recently she performed on the “Classical Progressions” concert series at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, and is invited guest artist with the Philomusica Quartet. More solo performances include the Green Bay Symphony, Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, the UWM Wind Ensemble and UWM Symphony Orchestra. She has recorded for the Avie label and Albany Records as well as numerous recording and editing projects for Hal Leonard’s G. Schirmer Instrumental Library and Schirmer Performance Editions. Ms.Abend is a founding member of the Elisio Ensemble whose mission is promoting Latin American music. She currently serves on the Piano and Chamber Music Faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
