ARC supports access for campus courses, events, and programs, which includes sign language interpreting, real-time captioning, media accessibility, and document remediation, and more. ARC focuses primarily on accessibility for enrolled students who are registered with our office. However, we do offer services for the campus as a whole. At present, ARC can only support the campus with real-time captioning and sign language interpreting accommodation services.

ARC Accommodation Services

  • Accommodations offered include Sign Language Interpreting and Real-Time Captioning @ $70 per hour, per service provider.
  • Workday Billing Information must be provided by the requesting unit when accommodations are for events or programs not involving ARC registered students.
  • Assignments over an hour and 15 minutes may require two interpreters or real-time captionists. Any assignments under an hour will be charged a 1-hour minimum.
  • All requests must be canceled within two full business days during normal business hours (for example, if an event starts at 4 pm on Thursday, it must be canceled by 4 pm on Monday). The department making the request may be responsible for any charges if cancellation occurs less than two full business days.
Due to the high demand for interpreters and captionists in the Milwaukee area, we request a minimum of five (5) business days to secure accommodations for your event. If your request is less than five days out from the date of the event, we cannot guarantee services at this time.

University-Sponsored Events and Programs

As a standard of good practice, any UWM sponsored programming should be inclusive. As a public institution, all UWM sponsored programming must be made accessible to the general public. Review tips for making an event inclusive.

If you are a member of the public seeking accommodations for a program put on or sponsored by UWM, please contact the individual designated as the point of contact for the program you are looking to attend. The university sponsor may then submit a request to ARC with their Workday billing information.

UWM staff

ARC can provide real-time captioning and sign language interpreting services for UWM faculty or staff with an approved accommodation through Human Resources (HR).

UWM employees without an approved accommodation requesting services should read UWM’s Reasonable Accommodation Policy and Procedures, and then must complete HR’s Reasonable Accommodation Request form.

UWM employees with an approved accommodation may request accommodation services directly through the ARC Accommodation Service Request Form or inform the department or unit sponsoring the event of their accommodation request.

Requests submitted to ARC must include Workday billing information, as the sponsoring department or unit, or the department or unit where the staff person is employed, is responsible for covering the costs of the accommodation(s).

For activities and events, students with an active accommodation plan must submit a custom request for real-time captioners or sign language interpreters through ARConnect.
