Insecurities of Expulsion: Afro-Asian Citizenship and Global Uganda:

Dr. Hundle is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Dhan Kaur Sahota Presidential Chair of Sikh Studies at the University of California, Irvine. She will present a talk that provides an overview of her forthcoming book manuscript, “Insecurities of Expulsion: Afro-Asian Citizenship Formations and Global Uganda.” The project explores the complicated contradictions between the unresolved historical event of the postcolonial expulsion of Ugandan Asians and a new post-1990s landscape of neoliberal capitalist empire which engages the sub-imperialist ambitions of BRICS nations alongside a remaking of Afro-Asian discourses. Dr. Hundle examines the ways in which the Ugandan state negotiates new South Asian capital, entrepreneurs, and precarious labor diasporas and migrants, reshaping “Asianness” and citizenship in contemporary Uganda.  She offers the analytics of “Afro-Asian relationalities” and “Afro-Asian citizenship formations” as key foundations for a disciplinary field formation of Global South Afro-Asianisms that avoids the pitfalls of methodological nationalisms and area studies frameworks in existing studies of multi-racial East Africa.

Q&A session will follow to discuss the concerns of African and South Asian descendant communities in the US in transnational dialogue with East Africa and the Global South.
