These resources house a tremendous number of funding opportunities and provide powerful ways to search them.

UWM Research Updates

UWM Research Updates

Each week Proposal Development Services compiles, summarizes, and distributes federal and non-federal grant opportunities to UWM researchers. Summaries include deadlines, contact information, and links to full solicitations. To receive updates, send an email to or-osp-propdev@uwm.edu.

Limited Submissions

Limited-submission competitions are those which limit the number of applications UWM can put forward in either a preliminary or full proposal state.Limited-submission opportunities are announced via the UWM Research Updates. Interested applicants should submit a letter of intent (LOI) as specified in the respective announcement. If the number of LOIs exceeds the allowable number of submissions, an internal competition will be held. Instructions and the deadlines for the internal competition will be sent to all prospective applicants.

Internal Grant Programs

Internal grant programs provide funding for travel to present research and attend conferences, develop research initiatives, foster international collaboration, and develop public service projects. The Office of Research administers internal grant programs, and all applications are peer-reviewed by committees comprised of faculty members.

Arts and Humanities Research Travel Award

Provides travel support funding to UWM faculty, instructional and research academic staff for presenting scholarly and creative works at conferences, performances, or exhibitions, and for conducting research.

Research Growth Initiative®

Seeding program that supports high-quality research projects in the early stages. The program’s objective is to increase UWM‘s research productivity, scholarship, creative endeavors, collaborative projects, and external funding by investing in projects selected through an independent and objective process.

Research and Creative Activities Support (RACAS)

Provides competitive support for faculty and instructional and research academic staff across the breadth of meritorious scholarship at UWM. Supported projects are expected to result in appropriate scholarly products that will increase the national and international recognition of the awardees, their programs, and the University.

Support for Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF)

Designed to foster faculty-student research collaborations, faculty and academic staff can apply for the awards to provide an hourly wage for undergraduate students working as research assistants. Students will be paid as hourly employees.

University of Wisconsin (UW) System Grants

The following grant programs are offered through the University Wisconsin System. Review the posted grant announcements carefully for eligibility restrictions.

Applied Research Grant Program (ARG)

A one-year program designed to encourage faculty and academic staff to apply their expertise and scholarship to the economic development of Wisconsin. Proposals are invited from faculty and staff in ALL academic disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, and liberal arts.

Ideadvance

Provides a source of capital to encourage and support the UW community to explore and de-risk their ideas, address roadblocks, and ultimately accelerate commercialization of ideas across all disciplines.

Solid Waste Research Program

Supports applied research into alternative methods of solid waste disposal.

UW System-WiSys Applied Research-WiTAG Program

A one-year program in science and technology fields only. This program is NOT available for UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee researchers; however, Madison and Milwaukee faculty may collaborate on AR-WiTAG grant proposals submitted by other UW institutions.

Wisconsin Small Company Advancement Program (WiSCAP)

Support to develop technology innovations in partnership with Wisconsin small companies to create business growth and jobs. Companies must submit a research proposal jointly with a UW comprehensive campus to WiSys Technology Foundation.

Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Periodic funding opportunity announcements.
Directory of Grants and Fellowships in the Global Health Sciences (Fogarty International Center) Includes nearly 500 funding opportunities related to biomedical and behavioral sciences, with a special emphasis on researchers in the developing world and their collaborators. An addendum listing 100 grants specifically for short-term travel and externships.
