She has done research and taught courses on adult learning, international education and the impact of technology on teaching and learning. Lucy Mkandawire-Valhmu (left) and Peninnah Kako are faculty in the College of Nursing. Mkandawire Valhmu, originally from Malawi, conducts research on violence in the lives of women in southern Africa, health care of immigrants and refugees, community health nursing and application of feminist methodology with women in developing countries. Naira Campbell-Kyureghyan is a Professor and Department Chair of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. Born and raised in Armenia (former USSR), with multicultural roots, Campbell-Kyureghyan’s research is dedicated to occupational biomechanics, specifically the etiology of injury and chronic disorders, and development of protective countermeasures. She is also the founding director of several research laboratories and research consortia (CARGI), with her research resulting in many publications and translating to licenses with national companies. Originally hailing from Ukraine, Maria Haigh is an associate professor in the School of Information Studies. Haigh researches information practices, policies and institutions in the former Soviet bloc, and has published research about the online file-sharing practices in the post-Soviet world. Anna Mansson McGinty, a native of Sweden, is a geography and women's and gender studies associate professor. Mansson McGinty studies the formation of Muslim identities and geographies in the West, looking at the personal, social and political contexts. She is involved in a collaborative partnership among academic researchers and Muslim community leaders in Milwaukee. International Women’s Day is annually held on March 8 to celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and across nations.
Today, UWM is celebrating our incredible international women faculty, the women who bring knowledge and passion to students and their colleagues. Their work spans a wide range — from furthering the education of adults and improving health care to lessening the environmental impact of art materials and reducing violence.
