What kinds of UWM FitWell courses are available?

UW-Milwaukee’s FitWell Program offers more than 60 different 1- and 2-credit activity courses with in-person, online, and hybrid options. Gain experience and build skills in physical activities, sports, recreation and wellness courses.

Our courses are organized by types of activities: Creative, Active, Water Activities, Competitive, Strategic, Outdoor and Mindful. Follow links to sorted categories.

Will I be challenged in UWM FitWell courses?

Many courses are offered at various levels, our skilled instructors personalize the FitWell courses so that experienced students are challenged and beginners can grow at a pace that is best for them.

While some courses have prerequisites, feel free to take UWM FitWell courses in the order that best fits your schedule and based on your level of experience.

Can I get a copy of a previously used UWM FitWell syllabus?

Yes. Email fit-well@uwm.edu if you would like a copy of a previous FitWell course syllabus.

When should I register for a UWM FitWell course/class?

Save your seat! We encourage you to register as early as possible to guarantee a spot. Register at least 3-4 weeks before the start of classes.

Courses may be added through the first days of the session – late add dates vary.

How do I register for a UWM FitWell course/class?

Register in PAWS. Select “FITWELL” under the Subject. Type the Class Title under Keywords. Watch this video for help with how to “Add a Class in PAWS.“

Register in Stellic. Select the specific Semester.
Type in the course code (FITWELL), select the section that works best for you, and add it to your plan.

Do UWM FitWell course credits count toward my GPA?

FitWell courses count toward undergraduate general elective credits and your UW-Milwaukee GPA. Usually, you can add a full or half-semester course at no additional tuition cost (if total credits are 12-18).

Can I take UWM FitWell course at no extra cost?

Undergraduates can add a full or half-semester class at no additional tuition cost* (if total credits are 12-18).

How many weeks does a UWM FitWell course run?
  • Full semester courses are offered in Fall and Spring.
    Semesters are 16 weeks.
  • Half semester courses are offered each Fall and Spring semesters in 7- or 8-week sessions.
    • Early (beginning of the semester)
    • Midterm (middle of the semester)
  • UWinteriM is 2 weeks.
  • Summer semester is 8 weeks.
Which UWM FitWell courses are offered this semester?

Get the most up-to-date information (day, time, location and instructor) in the UW-Milwaukee Schedule of Classes (SOC). Select the semester and select “FITWELL” under Any Subject.

Where are UWM FitWell courses held?

FitWell Courses are held on campus, near campus and off campus at a variety of locations. Some courses offer online or hybrid learning. See Locations.

Online – Synchronous vs. Asynchronous vs. Hybrid – How do these course work?

Synchronous Online learning refers to instructors and students gathering at the same time and interacting in “real-time.”

Asynchronous Online learning refers to students accessing materials at their own pace and interacting with each other over extended periods.

Hybrid or “blended” describes courses that combine face-to-face classroom instruction with online learning.

Can I take courses out of order (i.e. Yoga II before Yoga I)?

Some FitWell courses have prerequisites, but most courses don’t.

Take courses in the order that best fits your schedule and is based on your level of experience.

If you are unsure which level to take, please contact an instructor to determine the best fit.

Can I add or drop a UWM FitWell course?

You can easily make changes to your schedule in PAWS before classes begin.

FitWell courses may be added until the late add deadline.

Are there extra fees for supplies and equipment?

Some FitWell courses charge a special fee to cover the cost of specialized equipment, uniforms, etc.

There is also an Instructional Technology fee of $30 per credit for all Online courses.

Can Associate-level students take UWM FitWell courses?

Associate-level (2-year degree) students interested in taking a FitWell course need approval from their associate advisor and the course instructor. Tuition is assessed at the undergraduate level.

Can Graduate students take UWM FitWell courses?

Yes, but will receive undergraduate credit only. UWM Graduate-level tuition rates apply if enrolled for credit. Reach out to the Graduate School or your Advisor. Check with Student Financial Services Office.

Can I audit a UWM FitWell course?

Instructor permission is not required to audit a UWM FitWell course unless the student is a 60+/disabled auditor.

In Fall 2024, 60+ auditors can no longer enroll in FitWell courses offered in Engelmann Gym, the Klotsche Center or the Pavilion. In the past, auditors could request special permission from instructors to join the course, but this option is no longer available.

UWM students with access to the Klotsche Center/Pavilion will be eligible to enroll.
