April Spotlight – Sergeant Heather Maus

How long have you been with our department?

I have been with the UW-Milwaukee Police Department for 12 years.

Why Campus Law Enforcement?

I wanted to work in Campus Law Enforcement because I find it rewarding. I have had contacts with people during their freshman year and have stayed in touch throughout their education at UWM. I think it is fun to see someone mature and grow during their time at UWM.

What’s been your role in the department as it relates to Sexual Assault Awareness?

As a Sergeant for the last five years, part of my responsibilities included supervising our Sensitive Crimes Team. Our Sensitive Crimes teams consists of nine Officers and Sergeants who investigate sensitive crimes. These cases include sexual assaults, domestic violence, child pornography and dating violence. Our Officers provide a survivor focused response, in an effort to seek justice for the survivor if/when they choose to pursue the case through the Criminal Justice System. We work closely with other departments to provide resources with the goal of helping the survivor feel safe, secure, and supported.

What’s been the most rewarding part of the job thus far?

The most rewarding part of my job is staying in touch with survivors and seeing how strong they are. I have kept in touch with survivors throughout their time at UWM and have so much respect and admiration for how strong they are. I have learned so much from them on how to be a better Officer and how to conduct more thorough victim approached interviews.

Upcoming events

Please join our team in spreading awareness of sexual assaults on Denim Day at the Survivor Support & Wellness Fair in the Union on Wednesday, April 27th from 11a-1p.

Who is your role model? Why?

My role model is my mom. She is the strongest woman I know. She has showed me how to be a strong, independent woman. She is the most supportive and loving mother a girl can ask for.

What is a Fun Fact about yourself?

I’m a huge Denver Broncos fan.
