A few steps to stay safe & secure on campus

The UWM Police Department’s investigation into a recent attempted motor vehicle theft and subsequent near-campus crash remains active. UWM PD has continued to adjust patrol strategies and will provide the campus community with updates as appropriate.

With the increase in vehicle thefts in our area, UWM employees are encouraged to take a few action steps to increase their safety and security.

For owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles

Thieves have targeted Hyundai and Kia vehicles that don’t have push-button ignitions. Both companies offer owners a free anti-theft software upgrade. With the update, the engine won’t start if the key isn’t in the ignition.

If you haven’t had your Hyundai or Kia updated with the software, now is the time.  Dealerships provide the update in less than an hour.

  • Hyundai owners: Schedule your software upgrade online. Or call 800-633-5151.
  • Kia owners: See if your vehicle is eligible for an update; follow the steps here. Or call 800-333-4542.
  • Free steering wheel lock: Hyundai and Kia owners can pick up a steering wheel club at the UWM PD office, 2025 E. Newport Ave, Suite. 1457.

Stay alert and look out for each other

Be alert, and watch out for yourself and colleagues on campus and in the area. If you see any unusual behavior, report it to UWM PD.

Call 414-229-9911 in an emergency, or the UWM Police non-emergency line, 414-229-4627, which is answered 24 hours a day.

Download the Rave Guardian app
