Firefighters put themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis. Muscle strains and sprains are part of the job, but it can take significant recovery time before firefighters return to duty post-injury. Since 2010, UWM Physical Therapy and Athletic Training Associate Professor Kyle Ebersole has been rewriting the rules of firefighter fitness training and recovery. Through the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Peer Fitness Training Program, he’s teaching firefighters and Peer Fitness Trainers strategies for improving movement and fitness that are reducing injury rates and part of a program that saves millions of dollars.
