Surviving the Holocaust: Nate Taffel’s story

“After power is given to one man, many nations and many people suffered grave tragedies. The Holocaust took nearly all of Nate Taffel’s family, but he overcame tragedy and learned a greater understanding of the true meaning of peace and love. Nate Taffel’s story details a dark time in history that should not be forgotten or repeated.” – Amanda Porter, UWM journalism student

Porter shot and edited this video for her Advanced Integrated Reporting Class in Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies (JAMS). Students in the class refine their reporting skills by conducting in-depth interviews and completing print and multi-media projects telling their subjects’ stories.

This class made news last spring when students helped find missing photographs of Wisconsin soldiers killed in Vietnam for a memorial in Washington. This fall, JAMS senior lecturer Jessica McBride asked her students to work with Holocaust survivors in Milwaukee.

The students’ articles will be published on Media Milwaukee, and the completed projects also will be given to the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center.
